Will you go a bit further today, call both of your senators, and do the past month worth of our daily actions? Please remember: We will not see meaningful loan cancellation unless/until we get back the leverage that the threat of bankruptcy provides. This truly is the battle...YOUR BATTLE. The White House extension of the student loan repayment pause yesterday is a trick. See this to understand why. We hope/expect to get some national news coverage of this letter. Please Do This. If you've never done more than sign our petition...AT LEAST DO THIS! =========================== Mr. President, As a member of the nation's oldest, and largest grassroots group fighting for student loan justice, I need to convey serious disappointment with the announcement yesterday regarding the extension of the federal student loan repayment pause. Before the last election, you committed to both returning constitutional bankruptcy rights to federal loans, and also broadly cancelling the debt. To date, you have done neither, although both could have been done on Day One of your Presidency, without needing any appropriation from the Treasury, or adding anything to the national debt. In yesterday's announcement from the Department of Education neither bankruptcy, nor cancelling loans administratively was even mentioned. This is not the "fresh start" mentioned in the announcement. This looks more like what happened in 2008, where the democrats squandered their control of the House/Senate/Presidency, didn't even return bankruptcy protections to the loans, and nearly $1 Trillion in predatory student loan debt was stacked on the backs of Americans in the ensuing 8 years of your vice-presidency. Over 1 million of our members asked you take both of these actions. About half of them are aligned with the democrats, over half of them supported you in 2020 in the expectation that you would fulfill your campaign promises both on bankruptcy, and federal loan cancellation. These people were the difference in close elections like Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan. You and your party have an historically rare opportunity to solve this nationally threatening crisis, Mr. President. Please do not delay any longer. Please fulfill your promises to us, Mr. President. You've probably heard that the President is extending the student loan pause until September. This is good news for many, but beware: THIS IS A TRICK. In the press release, The White House says they'll put defaulted loans back into repayment, calling it a "fresh start". They don't mention returning bankruptcy rights, and also make no mention of cancelling loans by executive order. Sadly, leading democratic senators like Elizabeth Warren are both leading, and cheerleading it along. We've been warning for years, now, that the student loan complex would try hard to foist fake loan cancellation upon us and keep bankruptcy protections gone from the loans. This is clearly laying the groundwork for exactly that. Their strategy is almost certainly to extend the pause until just before the election, do an "Up to $50,000" loan cancellation (which will be bureaucratized to mean almost nothing for almost everyone), keep bankruptcy gone from the loans, and add another 20+ years onto the life of this weaponized lending system. Senator Warren taught bankruptcy at Harvard Law School for many years. One of our first splashes- and Senator Warren's first splash- in the national media was in a seminal top story on 60 minutes in 2006, where she nailed it on bankruptcy. To see her now not fighting for bankruptcy, and in fact her deafening silence on whether she supports bankruptcy legislation, speaks volumes. Senator Warren knows that the "Fresh Start" that is needed is S.2598, the FRESH START THROUGH BANKRUPTCY ACT. The democrats control the Presidency, House, and Senate right now, which is very rare. They have ONE SHOT at solving the student loan problem between now and November, if they are to have any chance in the mid-terms. If they continue on this course, they will be crushed by voters who are far smarter than they are being taken for. YOU SHOULD BE EXTREMELY CONCERNED.
