With 38 million people in the country who were never going to ever be able to repay this predatory debt even before the pandemic, we should easily get this petition to over 5 million people. Also this just came out: The Department of Education is accepting comments about the "new" Income-Driven Repayment program just announced. It is a confusing mess, doesn't help many people, and really is only a distraction from the unconstitutional and predatory nature of the lending program By all means weigh in, and MAKE THEM FEEL YOUR PAIN! Our comment: "...This is a non-starting, too-often-repeated, futile exercise by the Department of Education. In the continued absence of the constitutional bankruptcy rights called for by the Founders, No IDR plan- including the hodge-podge already in existence, will be anything but cruel jokes on the citizens, where the overwhelming majority of borrowers are disqualified out of the program, run with the worst of bad faith by a hopelessly captured and corrupted federal agency that has never had, does not now have, and will never have any institutional desire or intentions of cancelling loans. Unless and until federal student loans are treated the same as all other loans in bankruptcy proceedings, re-arranging deckchairs- such as what this exercise is- will only serve to perpetuate a nationally threatening, predatory abomination that should have been taken to the bath, and drowned in the tub years or decades ago. Undersecretary Kvaal and Officer Cordray should find the courage to acknowledge this failed lending program for what it is, and proceed accordingly. The implications of allowing this unconstitutional loan scam to persist go well beyond student loans, and one would hope that these men realize that the stakes are very high for the country, and that this will define their legacy." I’m glad to report that MSNBC is airing our documentary nationally again on January 15th. We are getting stronger, but only as strong as you make us. Thanks to the people in this group and our petition- we achieved a student loan cancellation, and the end of federal opposition to borrowers in bankruptcy in 2022! However: these wins are woefully incomplete/inadequate for us, and 2023 will be a much bigger battle. I have to ask: Will you please make a donation at this time? It is very important that we continue this battle this year. That will only happen with your nominal support, and we are in a very difficult spot right now on this front.
