Special Action Request...

Hey All-

Today's action is very quick:  Like and Retweet This, and call out influencers who might help spread the word.  Also, paste the link to the petition in at least ten places where people with student loans will see it.  Pretty simple!

Special Request for Action: Hitting the Governors.

If we can get even one republican governor to stand up and call on the President to cancel student loans by executive order, the entire game changes for us. If you live in one of the states in the graphic, and have a republican governor, please try to get a meeting with the Governor, the Chief of Staff, or other staff.  They need to know that student debt exceeds their entire state budget, and they need to join us in calling on the President to cancel the loans.

Send them this article.  Tell them you would like a meeting, and that you would like to bring in a representative from StudentLoanJustice.Org to brief them.  If you get in an email exchange, you can CC us in.  Our email is [email protected]

This will take some serious effort on your part.  It is worth it.
If we can get even one republican governor to do the right thing, stand up for their state, and up to the federal lending system, everything will change.  Worth your effort.  If you care about your state, do it out of state pride.

Fundraising:

We need to get a jump on fundraising this month.  Will you please make a first-time donation, or re-up your previous support at this time?  This will help us tremendously by allowing us to focus on the fight.

Thanks.

Daily Action

Hey All-

Today's action is very quick:  Retweet This.  Also, paste the link to the petition in at least ten places where people with student loans will see it.  Pretty simple!

Fundraising:

We are still under some fundraising pressure.  We were able to make our monthly expenses (THANK YOU) by the nose, but we also have some additional upcoming expenses over the next week of roughly $150.  Anything that you can contribute towards these is much needed and appreciated.

http://www.studentloanjustice.org/donate.html

If you haven't donated in a while, or have never donated, will you pleaser re-up your support at this time, or make a first time contribution?  We cannot do this without your modest financial support.

Hitting the Governors.

Congress is back in Session this week.  We have a key confirmation coming up next week.  In the meantime, we will continue to push key conservative governors. Please remember that if we can get even one republican governor to stand up and call on the President to cancel student loans by executive order, the entire game changes for us.  It only takes one person to make that happen.  Let it be you!

Alright Folks.  Let's make today count!

Hey Everyone-

It's a critical time for this fight right now. We're going to need your help all week, starting with these three governors.  Please like and retweet these:
Governor Chris Sununu (New Hampshire)
Governor Mike Parson (Missouri)
Governor Henry McMaster (South Carolina)

If you missed last week, please like and retweet these as well:
Governor Brian Kemp (Georgia)
Governor Ron DeSantis (Florida)
Governor Greg Abbot (Texas)

These, and the other governors of states where student loan debt now exceeds their state budgets, can, should, and will change the game for us when we push them.  This starts with you!
On that note:  We would very much like to engage these governors. If you live in one of the states that is underwater (or nearly underwater) in student loan debt, and feel up to the task of arranging a phone conference with these governors or their staff, please let us know.  We can do most of the talking in the meeting, but we need local people to get the ball rolling.  Please consider it.
Let's make this a strong week, Yes?  See this livestream...
Sincerely,
Alan Collinge

Press Release

Picture
Durbin, Cornyn Introduce Critical Bankruptcy Legislation for Student Loans

August 5th, 2021

We strongly applaud Senator's Dick Durbin (IL) and John Cornyn (TX) for introducing  The Fresh Start Through Bankruptcy Act of 2021.  Returning bankruptcy protections to federal student loans is the first step that must be taken to address this national crisis.  Holding educational institutions nominally accountable for outcomes is also needed.

The Founders called for uniform bankruptcy laws ahead of the power to raise an army, declare war, and create a judiciary in Article I, Section 8 of the US Constitution.  Today, student loans stand as the only type of loan in the country to be uniquely stripped of this constitutional enshrined protection.

The consequences of this have been disastrous.  45.4 million citizens are burdened under $1.6 Trillion in federal student loan debt. The default rate for the class of 2004 is 40%, but these people borrowed less than a third of what is borrowed today.  Even before the covid-19 pandemic , 80% of these borrowers were either unable to pay on their loans, or were paying but their loan balances were increasing.   The default rate for sub-prime home mortgages, by contrast, was only 20%.

Student debt in over a third of U.S. States now exceeds the entire state budget. Older borrowers (over 35) now outnumber younger borrowers (under 35), and they owe far more, despite having borrowed far less.  This is- to be blunt- a catastrophically failed lending system, and the tax-paying voters being financially harmed by it span the political spectrum.

We believe that these loans should be completely cancelled by executive order such that no money would be needed from the Treasury and nothing would be added to the national debt.  The lending system should be ended and replaced with a more rational funding model. Returning bankruptcy rights is the first step to take- and very least that Congress can do.

We request all Senators to support this historic legislation.  Specifically, we ask Senators in the states of Georgia, Florida, Texas, Indiana, Missouri, Maryland, Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, Michigan,  New Hampshire, South Dakota, and Virginia to make extra efforts to quickly pass this bill.

We ask our 1.1 million members, and citizens everywhere to demand that their senators pass this long overdue, and much needed legislation.

A Big Step Forward Today

Everyone:

I'm very glad to report that, at long last, we now have a bipartisan student loan bankruptcy bill in the US Senate.  The bill returns standard bankruptcy protections to all federal student loan borrowers, with a ten-year waiting period.  This is retroactive.  So...this is truly a major step forward.   The bill is being jointly introduced by Senator Durbin and Senator John Cornyn (Texas).  Here is the press release.

Special thanks go out to Diane Barta, who testified in today's hearing.  Also Linda Navarro, a veteran and warrior whose plight Senator Durbin described in open session yesterday.  See the video.  Thanks to EVERYONE who submitted their stories.  They are being used, and will be used going forward.

Please remember:  Bankruptcy has to happen if we are going to get meaningful loan cancellation.  The former is a necessary precondition for the latter.  This makes this bill all the more important!

We have a lot of work ahead, but the light is at the end of the tunnel.  This bill is brand new, and requires our very serious dedication to see through to final passage.  All bodes well, but see the hearing.  We have to fight.  Thankfully, we have all the ammunition to get even the most recalcitrant senators (like Ted Cruz) on our side.

I hope you are pleased. But we're going to need your help...more than ever.

I have to ask:  Will you please donate something at this time?  We currently have $53 in our operating account.  If you could make a first time donation, or re-up you previous support at this time, it would go a long ways towards allowing us to focus on this fight.

LET'S ROLL

Very Important Group Action Today. Please read...

Everyone-
There is a VERY critical  Senate hearing on student loans happening on Tuesday.  This is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Will you please retweet these as soon as possible?:
Sen. Chuck Grassley (Iowa)
Sen. Lindsey Graham (South Carolina)
Sen John Cornyn (Texas)
Sen. Mike Lee (Utah)
Sen. Ted Cruz
Sen. Ben Sasse (Nebraska)
Sen. Josh Hawley (Missouri)
Sen. Tom Cotton (Arkansas)
Sen. John Kennedy (Louisiana)
Sen. Thom Tillis (North Carolina)
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (Tennessee)

We have to put these Senators on the spot.
Do more than this!  Call out state newspapers and other news organizations in the comments.  Call out the governors of these states.  Be creative.  Anything you might think of to make these more impactful on these senators is worth doing...
Please remember:  Bankruptcy has to happen first, in order for meaningful student loan cancellation to happen at all!  We have learned that lesson the hard way over 16 years.  If we don't get bankruptcy back, we'll get a FAKE loan cancellation plan.  When we get bankruptcy back, they will HAVE to do MEANINGFUL loan cancellation!
I explain all this in this livestream.
This one is so important.  Please make it happen.  Sink or swim-
